I cannot tell you how many times I drove past The Desert Rose, realising with a sinking heart that I had “missed it again!” This farmstall in the middle of nowhere along the N7 tends to sneak up on you, making screeching to a halt at 120km an hour difficult. But when you eventually get it right, it’s worth your smoking tyres.
It’s as interesting on the inside as the outside and full of all sorts of quirky and creative décor. Even the menu is cheerfully decorated with hearts, teapots and vintage images. Usual farm stall fare is on offer, including burgers, toasted sandwiches, filled pita breads, scones (including biltong scones!), muffins, pies with chips, pancakes and salad options. Breakfast is also available all day.
If you’re travelling with children, there’s a jungle gym to keep them occupied and a huge lawn to run on. Great for stretching little legs before you continue on the, er, next leg of your journey.
Inside information
Look out for the cute little suitcase that holds facecloths for drying your hands in the ladies loo. You’ll be tempted to snap it closed and go home with it. Having said that, I hope no-one has!
