If you don’t feel like cooking and doing the dishes on Christmas Day, here are seven spots in Cape Town offering delicious festive fare for under R500.

Let’s face it, times are tight and Christmas Day can generally be an expensive affair if you want to treat yourself to a festive feast at a restaurant. However, there are some eateries that are offering a really delicious menu at a reasonable price. Here are seven restaurants in Cape Town that are offering buffets, set menus and even a few vegan options for under R500.

Note: I contacted each restaurant listed below and they confirmed that they still have room at the banquet. But be quick – they won’t for much longer!

1. BEERHOUSE ON LONG, CITY BOWL

Where:
223 Long Street, City Bowl

Time:
11h00 to 18h00

Menu:
Two-course menu with the main dish being gammon, smoked chicken breast and a marinated beef kebab, served with sweet carrots and an onion and leak potato bake. Followed by cheesecake for dessert.

2. DRIFTWOOD CAFÉ, TABLE VIEW

Where:
Corner Hampstead Close & Parklands Main Road, Table View

Time:
12h00 to 22h30

Cost:
Adults R380, children under 10 years R150

Menu:
A no-limit buffet with calamari, shrimp cocktail and salads for starters; glazed gammon, roast chicken, roast pork, roast beef, fish and lasagne, along with roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and for mains. Dessert selection includes trifle, cheesecake and milk tart.

3. COPPER BAY RESTAURANT, SIMON’S TOWN

Menu:
Welcome drinks onf arrival followed by a three-course lunch. For starters, there’s a choice of  deconstructed avocado ritz or tomato and basil bruschetta. Choose between roast gammon and roast beef or cranberry, apple and onion stuffed chicken roulade or a nut roast for mains. Dessert includes a choice between a lime and litchi panacotta or Malva pudding.

4. THE FAT GREEK, TABLE VIEW

Cost:

Menu:
Welcome drink served with freshly baked pita bread, hummus and tzatziki. Starters include a prawn cocktail, smoked salmon carpaccio, a watermelon and feta salad and Greek-style beans. For the main course there’s fresh kingklip, Chicken a la Greka, roast lamb, moussaka, and Yuvetsi in Tomato. Desserts include strawberries and ice cream, Bar One cheesecake, Baklava and Galaktoboureko.

5. THE ITALIAN CLUB, MILNERTON

Members R290, non-members R390,  children under 11 years R140, children under  3 years eat for free.

Menu:
Table platters with a selection of cured meats and grilled and marinated vegetables garnished with fresh herbs along with a caprese salad. This is followed by a choice between a traditional lasagne or tagliatelle napoletana. The main dish is an oven-baked chicken breast topped with baby tomatoes and parmesan served with mashed potato and peperonata. Finish off with a buffet di dolce (dessert buffet).

6. SKYE DECK ROOFBAR AT THE HYDE HOTEL, SEA POINT

Menu:
The summer buffet spread includes Portuguese rolls with pates and preserves, grilled chilli-butter prawns and salads for starters. Mains include bacon-covered turkey with sausage, gammon and roast leg of lamb with a selection of sides including potato and fennel salad, broccoli and cauliflower gratin and a roasted beetroot and goat’s cheese salad.  The dessert selection includes mini cheesecakes with berry coulis, watermelon slices and ice cream cones.

7. SHAKESPEARE’S RESTAURANT, DURBANVILLE

Menu:

The extensive buffet includes Punjabi baked salmon with verde and limes, avocado ritz and wild mushroom parcels with a tarragon and pernod cream for starters. Mains include cumin rack of lamb, and a slow roasted pork belly, turkey sausage and eisbein bobotie with homemade cranberry sauce, along with roast potatoes and vegetables. Dessert selection includes traditional Christmas trifle, dark chocolate crème brulee and vanilla and almond praline meringues.
