It’s one of the trendiest spots in town, they do great food, they have a very chic bar and now they have the happiest Happy Hour in The Mother City!

I first visited Burger & Lobster in August 2017 to try out their Winter All Rounder special and was quite impressed with both the restaurant and their food. But now things have gotten even better and even more affordable with the launch of their Happy Hour B&L Bar Bites Menu that’s available at the same time as their two-for-one drinks. And what’s more, it’s not a Happy Hour, but rather Happy Three Hours! Plus, it runs very day, including Sunday. As the biggest devotee of eating out on a budget, this has made me very happy indeed!
Now, before we go any further, you may be frowning and wonder why lobster is being served when it is on the Red List? Burger & Lobster import South Coast Lobster, which is little more expensive, but it means their conscience (and yours) is clear. The West Coast Lobster is on the Red List, not the South Coast Lobster, which incidentally looks a little different from the one most of us are used to seeing – it is red and white and has longer legs than its West Coast relative. In addition, their lobsters are never less than 350g in weight (any less than 350g is also illegal). Rest-assured, you can tuck in to their lobster guilt-free! But if you are still not convinced, there’s plenty of other dishes to choose from.
So what can you expect on the R38-a-plate menu? No less than a choice of ten dishes, from burger bombs to sliders and mac & cheese balls to mini prawn rolls (which made me think of a mini bunny chow filled to the brim with prawn meat and heaps of creamy mayonnaise). The helpings are as generous as the food is tasty so you won’t leave hungry!
Here’s the full menu (warning – don’t read this if you haven’t eaten):
Spicy Prawn Popcorn
Spiced deep-fried prawn popcorn topped with fresh chives and lime, served with garlic and herb aioli.
Mini Burger Bombs
Deep-fried mini burger patties stuffed with melted cheese, topped with maple bacon, chives and cheese. Served with their home-made spicy ranch dip.
Sliders
Two miniature burgers consisting of their famous B&L bacon and cheese burger and their Southern fried Sriracha-infused buttermilk chicken burger.
Mini Prawn Roll
Fresh prawns dressed in a light home-made Japanese mayonnaise and onion chives, served in a warm, toasted New England style brioche roll.
The Burger Bites
Their signature burger blend wrapped in a pastry shell with cheese and pickles.
Bacon Mac & Cheese Basket
Mac & cheese balls infused with maple bacon wrapped in oven baked phyllo pastry.
Spicy Buffalo Wings
Frank’s Red Hot spicy buffalo wings served with their home-made ranch dressing.
BBQ Buffalo Wings
Spicy honey and BBQ buffalo wings accompanied with their home-made ranch dressing.
Jack Daniel’s Pork Ribs
St. Louis style pork ribs with a Jack Daniel’s glaze served with their home-made ranch dressing.
Lobster and Prawn Bites
Fresh lobster and prawn wrapped in a fried pastry shell with cheese, lemon zest, chives and a side of sweet chilli sauce.
Then there’s the two-for-one drinks, which you can order with a friend or have them both to yourself. There are nine cocktails to choose from, ranging from R69-R79 (which equates to R35-R45 each). The wines by the glass include Graham Beck, Brampton and Linton Park from R45 (equates to R22.50 each), along with a selection of Graham Beck bubbly by the glass for R85 (equates to R42.50 each). Then there’s a selection of beers on tap that are also two-for-one, so beer-lovers are kept happy too. These include Red Rock Rusty Trigger Lager, Red Rock Bad Moon Crystal Weiss, Red Rock Nine Inch Ale and Heineken from R34 for 340ml. I can personally recommend the Coney Island cocktail (R79) with Bombay Sapphire Gin and sweet vermouth shaken with apricot jam, passion fruit and lime and then topped with coconut lime foam. It’s delicious!
So there you have it – the perfect miss-the-traffic drinks offer ever! Or a perfect start to a great evening out. Plus it’s a great idea for a birthday celebration – none of your pals can say they can’t afford to celebrate with you! However you look at it, this is an almost unbeaten Happy Hour deal and I say cheers to that!
